Amazon launches Alexa+ free in India

Amazon has launched Alexa+ free in India, giving the company a new AI foothold in one of the world’s biggest consumer markets as it races to turn voice assistants into shopping and task-completion tools.
The rollout matters because it moves Alexa from a simple conversational interface toward what Amazon calls agentic AI, a model designed to remember context, handle multi-step requests and push users deeper into Amazon’s retail ecosystem. For investors, that raises the strategic value of Alexa not as a standalone gadget feature but as a potential driver of engagement, Prime retention and commerce conversion.

In India, Alexa+ will work in Hindi and Hinglish at launch and is free for all users during early access. After that, Prime members will keep access at no extra cost, while Amazon expands language support over time.
The India launch also ties Alexa+ directly to Amazon Now, the company’s quick-commerce platform. Users can tell Alexa+ what they need and the assistant can add items to the cart, though the order still requires voice confirmation before checkout.
That integration is economically important because it brings Amazon closer to frictionless shopping in a market where convenience, local language support and mobile-first commerce all matter. A voice assistant that can remember preferences and complete recurring tasks could increase order frequency and help Amazon defend share against domestic rivals in India’s fast-moving retail and delivery market.
The move also keeps Amazon in the broader AI race led by Microsoft and Alphabet, both of which are spending heavily to embed generative and agentic capabilities across consumer and enterprise products. Unlike those companies’ cloud and productivity plays, Amazon’s edge in India is distribution: hardware, shopping, and now a localized voice layer tied to commerce.
Amazon said Alexa+ is already available on new Fire and Echo devices and its latest consumer hardware. That gives the company a built-in installed base to test whether conversational AI can translate into more shopping, more device usage and ultimately more monetization.
Amazon shares were last around $245.96, below the 50-day moving average of $255.55 and the 200-day average of $240.11, with RSI at 36.3, suggesting the stock remains weak even as the company widens its AI product stack. Alphabet and Microsoft shares were also below recent peaks, reflecting a market still trying to price how quickly AI features will become profitable.
The next catalyst is whether Amazon can show that Alexa+ drives measurable usage in India and expands beyond assistants into a broader commerce layer, especially as it adds more languages and connects the service to more devices and shopping flows.
