Amazon has crossed 2 million sellers in India, adding more than 300,000 over the past year as it moves to capture the country’s biggest online shopping period and deepen its grip on a market where small businesses are increasingly selling beyond their local reach.
Amazon India tops 2 million sellers
The milestone matters because the festive season is the most important sales window for Indian e-commerce, and a larger seller pool gives Amazon more inventory, more price competition and a better chance to convert seasonal traffic into transaction growth. It also shows how the company is using lower fees, AI tools and logistics investment to keep merchants on its marketplace instead of losing them to rivals.

Amazon said the seller community now spans first-time entrepreneurs in Tier-3 towns and established brands managing thousands of products. The company called the latest increase its strongest year-on-year seller growth, a sign that its marketplace continues to expand even as Indian online retail gets more competitive.
A key part of that push is cost reduction. Earlier this year, Amazon cut selling friction by removing referral fees on more than 125 million products, a move that can make low-value and high-volume listings more viable for merchants.
The company is also leaning harder on automation. Adoption of its Seller Assistant tool is doubling every six months, Amazon said, while interactions with the AI-powered assistant have risen 7.5 times year on year. The share of advertisers using AI tools on the platform rose 77% from a year earlier, and small and medium-sized businesses generated 62% more advertising creatives in the first quarter of 2026 than in the same period last year.
For investors, the message is that Amazon’s India business is building scale in a market where consumer spending can swing sharply around festive demand. More sellers should help support ad sales, logistics utilization and marketplace take rates, even if the company continues to subsidize growth through lower fees and infrastructure spending.
The development also underscores the strategic importance of India within global e-commerce, where Amazon, Walmart-owned Flipkart and others are competing for merchants and buyers ahead of the holiday shopping surge. The next catalyst is the festive sales period itself, which will show whether the seller expansion translates into higher order volumes and stronger marketplace monetization.
