Barilla buys Goodles mac and cheese brand

Barilla is buying Goodles, the fast-growing boxed mac-and-cheese brand co-founded by Gal Gadot, in a deal that gives the Italian pasta maker a foothold in one of packaged foods’ most competitive corners as consumers keep trading up for higher-protein, better-for-you staples.
The financial terms were not disclosed, but the acquisition follows a rapid rise for Goodles, which was valued at $88 million in a 2023 funding round and said it turned its first profit in 2024. Barilla, known globally for dried pasta and sauces, is getting a brand that has already expanded into Target, Walmart and Whole Foods and built recognition well beyond the kids’ mac-and-cheese aisle.

For Barilla, the deal is another sign that large food companies are looking to buy growth rather than build it from scratch as the category matures and competition intensifies from private label, niche wellness brands and premium shelf-space challengers. Goodles’ 73-person team will stay in place and co-founder Jen Zeszut will remain chief executive, limiting the risk of a disruptive integration and suggesting Barilla wants the brand’s current positioning intact.
Goodles, founded in 2020, has leaned on playful flavor names and a nutrition pitch that includes protein pasta with 21 grams of protein and 12 grams of fiber. Zeszut said 92% of the U.S. population still has not tried the brand, underscoring the growth runway Barilla is buying into if it can scale distribution without diluting the premium image that helped Goodles stand out.
The transaction also lands in a grocery market where consumer spending remains uneven, but demand for value-added staples and “better-for-you” comfort foods has proved more durable than many discretionary categories. In Adalytica’s food and grocery spending gauge, sentiment is neutral but awareness is at an “extreme fear” level, a sign that shoppers remain price-sensitive even as brands compete on health claims and convenience.
Barilla said the deal is subject to regulatory approval. For investors, the key question is whether the acquisition helps the company capture more of the U.S. premium pasta and ready-meal market without compromising margins, and whether Goodles can keep its growth rate once it sits inside a much larger food portfolio.
