Bucharest’s benchmark BET index slipped 0.97% on Friday, ending a five-session winning streak as risk aversion returned to global markets and dragged financial and utility names lower on the day.
BET Index Falls 0.97% as Risk Aversion Returns

The BET closed at 33,562.51 points after tracking weaker sentiment in major European and U.S. markets, where the Dow Jones Industrial Average was down about 1% and Germany’s DAX 40 again tested the 25,000-point area. For local investors, the pullback matters because the Romanian market has been benefiting from broad advances in banking, energy and regulated utilities, making it vulnerable when international appetite for risk cools.
Turnover on the main equity market reached 162.53 million lei, or 30.38 million euro, but activity was inflated by special deals. The biggest was a 1.31 million-share block trade in Premier Energy at 52 lei a share, 5.45% below the prior reference price, valued at 68.46 million lei. Premier Energy also fell 3.27% in regular trading to 53.20 lei, while Romgaz had a 6.85 million lei block trade at 17.90 lei and OMV Petrom rose 0.65% to 1.2330 lei.
Banks were among the main drags on the index. Banca Transilvania fell 1.73% to 35.12 lei on 26.76 million lei of trades, while BRD Groupe Societe Generale slipped 0.64% to 30.90 lei. Hidroelectrica eased 0.33% to 179.40 lei, but the sharpest declines among liquid names came from Nuclearelectrica, down 4.70%, Digi Communications, down 2.06%, and Electrica, down 3.05%.
The move leaves BET still near elevated levels after its recent advance, but it also shows how quickly local gains can be pared back when external markets turn defensive. Investors will now watch whether the correction broadens in Bucharest or remains a one-day pause, with global risk sentiment, energy prices and further block trades likely to set the tone.
