Bitcoin Falls as Iran Tensions Weigh on Crypto

Bitcoin slipped while Ethereum held a narrow range and XRP and Dogecoin weakened as investors weighed whether rising geopolitical tension around Iran will keep risk appetite subdued and delay a broader crypto breakout.
The uneven move left the world’s biggest digital asset near $79,465, after briefly touching $80,500 before reversing, while Ethereum finished at $2,492.54. XRP fell to $1.40 and Dogecoin also traded lower, underscoring how quickly traders are taking profit or cutting exposure when macro risk rises.

The market backdrop is still fragile. More than $225 million in crypto positions were liquidated over the past 24 hours, with most of the losses coming from bearish bets, according to Coinglass. Bitcoin open interest fell 0.70%, suggesting traders are trimming leverage rather than committing to a direction.
That caution comes as Washington and Tehran remain deadlocked and Energy Secretary Chris Wright said he doubts a nuclear deal is likely, raising the odds that the U.S. instead pursues steps to weaken Iran’s nuclear capability. Stock futures also edged lower, with Dow futures down 0.25% and the S&P 500 and Nasdaq 100 both slightly weaker, a sign that the geopolitical backdrop is spilling into broader risk assets.
Even so, some analysts argue the market is consolidating rather than breaking down. Michaël van de Poppe said Bitcoin could reach $90,000 and Ethereum could move above $3,000, calling those levels “relatively easy” if Bitcoin keeps ranging. Ali Martinez said Ethereum is building momentum inside a $2,370-$2,530 band and that a close above $2,530 could open the way to $2,700.
For investors, the key question is whether geopolitical stress turns into another flush of leveraged long positions or whether Bitcoin stabilizes enough to drag the rest of the market higher. The next catalyst is likely to be any fresh Iran-related headline, which could determine whether crypto holds its current range or extends the recent volatility.
