BMW recalls 189,130 cars over starter motor defect

BMW is recalling 189,130 cars worldwide, including 5,788 in Germany, after engineers identified a defect in the starter motor relay that can corrode if water gets into the component and create a short-circuit and engine-bay fire risk.
The action covers vehicles built from July 29, 2014 through Nov. 12, 2020, and reaches some of BMW’s most important sedans, including 3, 5 and 7 Series models. Owners cannot fix the issue with a software update; dealerships will replace the starter motor assembly at no charge, though BMW is not обязated to provide a replacement vehicle during the repair.
For investors, the recall matters because it adds warranty and service costs at a time when automakers are under pressure to control quality expenses while protecting premium pricing and margins. Safety campaigns can also dent brand perception if they become repetitive, particularly for a maker that sells heavily on engineering credibility and reliability.
BMW shares in Frankfurt were little changed around the announcement, but the stock has been volatile in recent months. The shares closed at 63.00 euros on Friday, below a 200-day moving average of 73.50 euros, while the 50-day moving average sits near 59.49 euros; the conventional RSI reading was 66.5, suggesting momentum has improved even as the longer trend remains weaker.
The recall also revives scrutiny of electrical defects across the industry. BMW carried out another large recall last year tied to a similar starter-motor insulation issue that affected more than 145,000 vehicles, underscoring how a problem in a single low-cost component can translate into a broad and expensive service campaign.
Owners are being told to check whether they received an official notice, or to use a dealer’s VIN lookup to confirm if their car is included. The key near-term risk for BMW is whether the repair campaign stays contained or becomes another reminder of recurring quality issues just as the company works to preserve demand in its core luxury lineup.
