Trading on the BRVM jumped to 6.166 billion CFA francs on Tuesday, but the regional exchange still extended its slide for a third straight session as investors used the stronger turnover to reshuffle positions rather than lift prices.
BRVM turnover jumps as indices fall for third day

The day’s volume was more than double Monday’s 2.918 billion CFA francs and well above the market’s recent daily average of about 2.940 billion, a sign that liquidity returned even as risk appetite remained cautious. For investors, that combination matters: higher activity in a falling market often points to active rotation, profit-taking or selective bargain hunting rather than broad conviction.

The BRVM Composite fell 0.28% to 543.91 points, while the BRVM 30 dropped 0.36% and the BRVM Principal lost 0.50%. The decline was modest, but it was broad enough to weigh on both the equity market capitalisation, which slipped 60.805 billion CFA francs to 21,329.309 billion, and the bond market, where capitalization eased 17.809 billion CFA francs to 13,517.171 billion.
The message for investors is that the rally in turnover has not yet translated into price support. That leaves the market vulnerable to further consolidation if buyers do not emerge in larger-cap names, particularly after three consecutive down sessions. In technical terms, the BRVM’s short-term trend has weakened, though the move so far looks more like a pause than a disorderly selloff.
Stock-specific moves underscored the market’s selective tone. TotalEnergies Marketing Côte d’Ivoire led gainers, rising 6.83%, followed by Tractafric Motors Côte d’Ivoire and SETAO Côte d’Ivoire. On the losing side, Sicable Côte d’Ivoire fell 6.99%, while NSIA Banque Côte d’Ivoire and SAFCA Côte d’Ivoire also came under pressure. The pattern suggests investors are rotating into a narrow set of names while trimming exposure elsewhere, a common feature when sentiment is mixed and liquidity is improving.
For now, the key question is whether Tuesday’s surge in transactions marks the start of a deeper reallocation into regional equities or merely a burst of activity during a weak tape. If volumes stay elevated while the indices stabilize, that would argue for accumulation. If turnover fades and the market continues to drift lower, the latest session will look more like distribution than renewed demand.
