Bulgaria Dobrich corn harvest starts with weak yields
The corn harvest for grain has started in Bulgaria’s Dobrich region, but the first yields point to a weak opening for a crop that remains central to the local farm economy and grain supply outlook.
Officials from the agriculture ministry said just 460 decares have been harvested so far, with an average yield of 260.9 kilograms per decare. That is an early read on a crop planted across 464,520 decares in the region, where 29 decares have already been lost.
The start matters because Dobrich is one of Bulgaria’s most important grain-producing areas, and corn output feeds directly into farm incomes, livestock feed costs and broader food inflation pressures if weather or yields deteriorate further. For grain traders and agribusiness investors, the first Dobrich figures offer an initial benchmark for assessing whether this season’s crop can match earlier expectations after a volatile summer for European agriculture.
Sunflower harvesting is also moving ahead in the region, with 425,430 decares collected out of 939,000 decares planted and an average yield of 287.8 kilograms per decare. Wheat, by contrast, is already finished: 1.293 million decares were harvested out of 1.293 million sown, with an average yield of 691.5 kilograms per decare, underscoring that the region’s grain balance is now shifting from the more certain wheat crop to the more weather-sensitive corn and sunflower harvests.
That crop mix is important for markets because corn and sunflower seed are exposed to late-season heat and rainfall swings, while wheat has already largely locked in. Early weakness in corn would pressure margins for farmers and could tighten feed supply, while stronger-than-expected results later in the campaign would help offset losses elsewhere.
The next market-moving update will come as more of the corn area is brought in and yield data broadens beyond the first 460 decares, giving a clearer read on whether Dobrich can deliver a normal harvest or another weather-hit season.
