Greek stocks open higher as index tops 2,710
Greek stocks opened higher on Friday, with the General Index gaining 0.30% as buyers outnumbered sellers nearly two to one in early trading.
That matters because the move suggests domestic risk appetite is still intact even after a choppy stretch for global markets, and it gives local equities another foothold above the 2,700-point area. At 11:11 a.m. in Athens, the General Index stood at 2,710.97 points on turnover of about 49.5 million euros, with 51 stocks higher, 39 lower and 11 unchanged. The FTSE large-cap index added 0.39%, while the mid-cap FTSEM rose 0.19%.
For investors, the key signal is breadth. A market advance led by a majority of gainers is healthier than a narrow, index-heavy squeeze, especially in a market like Athens where the next leg often depends on flows into large-cap names and a steady bid in mid-caps. Early strength in the FTSE line-up points to continued support from the market’s heavier names, which can matter disproportionately for benchmark performance and foreign fund participation.
The tone also fits a market that has been trying to hold on to gains after recent volatility. The S&P 500, tracked in the data through standard technical indicators, has only recently stabilized after a sharp deterioration in market mood, while Adalytica’s S&P 500 Trade Signals snapshot still shows “Extreme Fear.” That backdrop argues for selective risk-taking rather than broad complacency, which can work in Greece if domestic catalysts remain supportive and large caps keep attracting capital.
Among individual movers, Tri Alfa jumped 7.08%, followed by Domiki Kritis at 6.02% and DIMAND at 3.04%. On the downside, Tzirakian fell 3.83%, Mermeren lost 3.36% and Medicon Ελλάς declined 3.23%.
The bigger takeaway is that Athens is starting the session with enough participation to keep the uptrend alive, and that is where the opportunity lies: in the stocks and sectors with the best liquidity, strongest earnings visibility and the ability to benefit first if the market’s cautious risk appetite turns into a more durable rotation into European equities.
