India debt mutual funds post ₹8,127 crore outflow
Debt mutual funds posted a net outflow of ₹8,127 crore in August, a sharp turn from July’s ₹1.88 lakh crore inflow, underscoring how quickly short-term cash parked in the category can move when liquidity needs change.
The reversal was driven mainly by overnight funds, which saw ₹30,654 crore leave the category in August after drawing ₹40,412.55 crore in July, according to Association of Mutual Funds in India data. That matters because overnight funds are widely used by treasurers, corporates and institutions as a parking place for surplus cash, so abrupt swings often point to shifting short-term liquidity preferences rather than a broad retreat from fixed income.
The broader debt category was not uniformly weak. Liquid funds still pulled in ₹19,934.29 crore and money market funds attracted ₹11,734.71 crore, suggesting investors kept money in short-duration instruments even as they pulled back from overnight products. At the same time, short-duration funds saw ₹4,258.56 crore of outflows and corporate bond funds lost ₹3,190.17 crore.
For investors, the flow pattern is a reminder that debt-fund demand is being reshuffled within the fixed-income complex rather than collapsing across the board. Categories used for cash management are especially sensitive to month-end treasury decisions, tax positioning and funding requirements, making them a useful read on near-term liquidity in India’s savings market.
The August data also came alongside continued strength in equity mutual funds, which drew about ₹29,328 crore, up nearly 19% from July, while equity SIP contributions hit a record ₹32,297 crore. That mix suggests retail investors are still committing to systematic equity investing even as some institutional and corporate cash rotates out of overnight debt funds.
The next test for debt-fund flows will be whether the August reversal proves to be a one-off cash-management reset or the start of a broader cooling in short-term fixed-income allocations.
