Jodhpur cumin prices rise as gold, silver rebound
Jodhpur’s commodity markets turned firmer on Thursday, led by a 150-200 rupee per quintal jump in cumin prices and a sharp rebound in bullion, with gold rising 3,800 rupees per 10 grams and silver adding 4,500 rupees per kilogram.
The move matters because cumin is a key cash crop for Rajasthan growers and traders, while bullion strength points to renewed risk aversion in broader commodity trade. Higher mandi prices can improve farmgate realizations for sellers, but they also raise costs for processors, spice traders and retail buyers.
In the spice complex, cumin quoted at 18,000-21,600 rupees per quintal in the Jodhpur mandi, while isabgol traded at 9,000-13,550 rupees and coriander at 13,000-15,200 rupees. Other agricultural commodities were broadly steady, with no major swing seen in isabgol, guar gum and related items.
The bullion move was more pronounced. Gold and silver prices in the local sarraf market gained momentum after recent volatility in global commodities, where oil has surged on geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and investors have sought defensive assets.
Jodhpur mandi rates for other staples also showed a mixed but largely stable picture, with fennel quoted at 7,500-9,900 rupees per quintal, fenugreek at 5,600-6,280 rupees, yellow mustard at 7,000-7,800 rupees and moong at 7,500-8,525 rupees. Traders said the evening price snapshot was taken at 6:50 p.m.
For investors and commodity watchers, the main takeaway is that local agri markets remain firm in select spices even as bullion catches a safe-haven bid. The next trigger will be whether the rally in gold and silver extends and whether cumin’s recent strength holds into the next set of mandi quotes.
