Jordan launches new 120,000-ton wheat tender
Jordan’s state grain buyer has launched a new international tender to purchase up to 120,000 metric tons of milling wheat, a sign the kingdom is still moving to secure imported supplies after failing to buy any grain in its previous tender on Tuesday.
The fresh purchase comes at a sensitive moment for global wheat markets, where North African and Middle Eastern importers are still active but Black Sea supply worries have eased enough to leave Chicago wheat near a two-week low. For buyers like Jordan, that can improve negotiating leverage, but it also underscores how quickly government tenders can move prices and trade flows in a thin market.
The tender seeks optional-origin wheat in two 60,000-ton consignments, with shipment windows from Oct. 16 to Oct. 31 and Nov. 1 to Nov. 15. Offers are due Sept. 22, and the schedule mirrors the failed Tuesday tender, suggesting Jordan is pressing ahead with its procurement plan rather than waiting for a better market break.
Jordan is also in the market for 120,000 tons of animal feed barley, with that tender closing Wednesday. The pair of tenders adds to a run of import buying in the region, after Algeria recently purchased about 500,000 tonnes of soft milling wheat in its own international tender.
For traders, the key issue is whether Jordan’s repeated tenders draw enough competitive bids to support near-term wheat prices and shipping demand from optional origins, including European exporters. The outcome will help set the tone for North African buying into the autumn, with further attention on Black Sea supply risks, crop quality in Europe and whether prices stabilize enough to entice more state tenders.
