Peru Inflation Remains Lowest in Latin America
Peru is standing out in Latin America with the region’s lowest inflation, giving policymakers and investors a rare pocket of price stability as much of the hemisphere still wrestles with higher borrowing costs and exchange-rate volatility.
Central bank chief Julio Velarde underscored the performance as Peru continues to keep consumer prices contained despite weather shocks, supply disruptions and an uncertain external backdrop. The message matters because low inflation gives the Banco Central de Reserva del Perú more room to keep policy predictable, support growth and avoid the kind of emergency tightening that has hurt other emerging markets.
For investors, the backdrop is supportive for local bonds, the sol and Peru-focused assets, which typically perform better when inflation is subdued and real yields are easier to anchor. It also helps explain why Peru has been able to preserve macro credibility even as regional peers face more persistent price pressures.
The economy has also shown resilience on the external side. Peru booked a $44.9 billion trade surplus in the second quarter, a cushion that helps offset imported inflation and gives the country more room to absorb shocks from commodity swings and global demand softness.
Still, the risks are not gone. Velarde and policymakers are watching for potential losses tied to the expected El Niño pattern in 2027, while currency swings could complicate the inflation outlook if imported goods become more expensive.
That makes Peru’s low-inflation advantage an important market story as well as a policy one: if it holds, the central bank can stay measured; if it slips, the country’s recent macro outperformance could narrow quickly.
