Reddit falls to $140.67 after outage and growth worries
Reddit’s value proposition to investors is no longer just that it is a fast-growing social platform — it is that its forum-style communities can turn search traffic, ads and AI interest into durable monetization, and that thesis took a hit after a major outage and a sharp selloff.
The stock plunged to $140.67 on July 31, down from $178.04 two days earlier, as a service failure that generated more than 28,000 complaints collided with cautionary remarks on growth in the company’s shareholder letter. The move erased roughly a fifth of the company’s market value in two sessions and pushed the shares well below the 50-day moving average of about $175, a technical sign that momentum investors are stepping back.
That matters because Reddit’s market case has always depended on a relatively narrow formula: highly engaged users, searchable conversations that surface in internet queries, and the ability to convert that attention into higher-value advertising and licensing deals. When service reliability slips, the platform’s core asset — user trust and habitual engagement — becomes easier to question. When management sounds less confident about the pace of U.S. user growth and the volatility of search referrals, investors start to discount the very traffic engine that underpins monetization.
The company’s latest quarter also showed the tension between operational execution and valuation. Reddit said sales and profit beat expectations, but that was not enough to offset concerns that growth may be normalizing after a strong run. The shares had already fallen from a 2026 high above $240 in early September of the prior period to a much more fragile setup by late July, with the 14-day relative strength index sliding to 18.4, a level that suggests the stock had become deeply oversold even before the latest drop. The MACD also weakened further, underscoring the deterioration in trend.
For investors, the question is whether Reddit is still a premium growth asset or becoming just another ad-supported internet platform exposed to the same pressures as larger rivals. The company remains differentiated by its community depth and the usefulness of its posts in search and AI training, but that narrative depends on sustained engagement and a clean operational record. The 10-Q underscores the risks: competition for advertising spend is intense, and any deterioration in user experience or content quality can quickly hit growth, retention and ad demand.
There is still a bull case. Reddit’s forum content is difficult to replicate, and its role in search discovery gives it a distinct source of traffic that can support monetization beyond traditional social feeds. If the company restores reliability, steadies user growth and proves that AI partnerships can be monetized without eroding its core communities, the recent selloff could look excessive.
The bear case is that the market is repricing Reddit as a high-beta advertising business with more execution risk than investors had assumed. After a record one-day decline and a sharp break below short-term technical support, the stock will likely need cleaner operating data — and fewer surprises — to regain confidence.
