South Korea’s National Pension Service posted about 182 trillion won in stock valuation losses in the third quarter, its biggest quarterly loss on record, as a sharp slide in domestic equities erased much of the gains accumulated earlier this year.
South Korea NPS posts 182 trillion won stock loss

The hit matters because the NPS is one of the country’s largest institutional investors and a key source of long-term demand in Seoul’s market. A loss on this scale can affect contribution and reserve management, reshape portfolio weights and reinforce pressure on pension returns at a time when many retirees and future beneficiaries are already sensitive to equity volatility.
More than 70% of the quarterly loss came from just two stocks, Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix, which together accounted for about 131 trillion won of the damage as technology shares retreated. That concentration underscores how heavily South Korea’s pension system remains exposed to the fortunes of its biggest semiconductor names, which dominate the benchmark and remain central to foreign and domestic investor flows.
The pension fund still added to some holdings, including GS Engineering & Construction and Hyundai Marine & Fire Insurance, while trimming stakes in Samsung Biologics, brokerage stocks and some KOSDAQ names. But the overall picture was a reversal from the first half, when a rally in Korean shares had produced large paper gains that were largely given back in one quarter.
Samsung Electronics shares have been under pressure and are now well below their 50-day and 200-day moving averages, while SK Hynix has also dropped sharply from summer highs, with conventional momentum indicators showing both stocks deep in oversold territory. For investors, the losses highlight how quickly pension-linked balance sheets can swing with the market, and how vulnerable Korea’s index-heavy structure is when semiconductors turn lower.
The next focus is whether the stock market stabilizes enough to stop further erosion in the NPS’s equity book, and whether the fund keeps rotating away from concentrated chip exposure or treats the selloff as a buying opportunity.
