THORChain 3.20 Adds Native Monero, Zcash Swaps
THORChain’s 3.20 upgrade opens native swaps between privacy coins Monero and Zcash and the largest crypto assets, giving traders a way to move into and out of Bitcoin, Ethereum and stablecoins without relying on wrapped tokens or centralized exchanges.
The timing matters because crypto appetite is already stretched to the upside. Bitcoin’s Adalytica fear-and-greed reading is at 100, or “Extreme Greed,” after a 40-point jump over seven days, while Ethereum also sits at 100 with a 82-point weekly surge in the same gauge, suggesting strong demand for on-chain trading routes as risk-taking broadens.
For investors, the upgrade is another sign that liquidity is still migrating toward decentralized infrastructure, especially where privacy and self-custody are part of the value proposition. THORChain’s pitch has long been cross-chain swaps without custodial intermediaries, and adding native Monero and Zcash support expands the pool of assets that can be traded directly against the market’s main settlement coins.
That could matter for RUNE, the protocol’s native token, if deeper swap volumes follow. It also raises the competitive pressure on centralized exchanges and other decentralized liquidity networks that want the flow generated by BTC, ETH and stablecoin pairs, particularly during periods of heightened crypto speculation.
The bigger narrative is that privacy-focused assets are being pulled further into the core of crypto market plumbing just as major tokens trade in overheated conditions. Whether the upgrade translates into lasting volume will depend on execution, liquidity depth and how quickly traders use the new routes.
| Entity | Gains | Losses |
|---|---|---|
| THORChain / RUNE | ▲More swap volume | ▼Higher execution risk |
| Monero / Zcash holders | ▲Native access to BTC, ETH, stables | ▼Greater regulatory scrutiny |
| Centralized exchanges | ▲— | ▼Lost routing flow |
| Bitcoin / Ethereum ecosystem | ▲More on-chain liquidity | ▼Potentially more volatility |
