Vietnam gold prices hold near record domestic levels

Gold prices in Vietnam held near record domestic levels at midday Sept. 10, with SJC bullion unchanged at 146.6 million dong per tael while some 9999 gold rings still traded as high as 148 million, underscoring the wide gap between brands and the persistent premium over global prices.
The spread matters because it shows Vietnam’s gold market remains tight even as international bullion has cooled slightly after a sharp run-up. For households and jewelry buyers, the gap between brands is now large enough to materially change purchase costs, while for traders it keeps arbitrage opportunities and retail demand uneven.
SJC quoted bullion at 143.6 million dong to buy and 146.6 million to sell, unchanged from the previous session. Major retailers including PNJ, DOJI, Phu Quý, Bảo Tín Minh Châu and Bảo Tín Mạnh Hải were broadly in line, while Mi Hồng priced bars slightly differently at 145 million to buy and 146.5 million to sell.
The ring market was more fragmented. SJC’s 99.99 ring gold was listed at 143.1 million to 146.1 million dong per tael, PNJ at 143.2 million to 146.5 million, Phú Quý at 143.6 million to 147 million and DOJI’s Hưng Thịnh Vượng 9999 ring at 144 million to 148 million, among the highest in the market.
Bảo Tín Minh Châu was an outlier on the lower end with 99.99 ring prices at 137.2 million to 141.2 million dong, highlighting how brand premiums remain unusually wide. That kind of dispersion matters for investors and consumers because it can shift buying behavior toward cheaper labels and widen losses for those entering at the top of the range.
Globally, spot gold edged up to about $4,408 an ounce, translating to roughly 139 million dong per tael before tax and fees. That leaves domestic prices about 7 million to 9 million dong above global levels, keeping Vietnam’s market elevated despite the modest rebound abroad.
In markets, gold-related exchange-traded fund GLD slipped to $396.36 on Sept. 10 after a stronger prior session, while GDX, which tracks gold miners, fell to $96.03 before a slight recovery. Adalytica’s Gold Fear & Greed Index stood at 31, in neutral territory, even as its awareness gauge pointed to “extreme fear,” suggesting investors remain cautious after recent volatility.
The near-term focus is whether global bullion can extend its recovery and narrow the domestic premium, or whether local demand keeps Vietnamese prices elevated. For now, the key investor risk is paying up in a market where brand differences alone can amount to several million dong per tael.
