XRP Holds $1.29 as Futures Leverage Unwinds
XRP is defending a crucial $1.29 support zone even as its futures market quietly unwinds more than $250 million in leverage, a reset that could leave the token better positioned for the next move if spot demand keeps absorbing the pullback.
That matters because the market is not looking at a clean bearish breakdown. It is looking at a derivatives contraction that has outpaced the price move itself. Open interest across XRP futures has slid from $1.128 billion in August to $871.22 million now, with broad reductions on Binance and Bybit, while XRP still trades near $1.30 and has continued to attract ETF inflows. In other words, speculative froth is coming out, but underlying demand has not disappeared.
For investors, that is the setup to watch. When leverage resets without a matching collapse in spot price, it often signals a market working off excess positioning rather than a thesis failure. Binance and OKX account data still show larger traders leaning long, even as the broader long/short ratio is close to balanced. Liquidations have been mixed rather than one-sided, which argues against a panic flush and suggests the market is still fighting over direction near a key inflection point.
The support level matters just as much as the leverage unwind. The $1.29 area lines up with the 20-week exponential moving average and the 0.382 Fibonacci retracement, making it the level bulls need to defend if they want to preserve the current range. A daily or weekly close below that zone would expose the psychologically important $1 level. Hold it, and XRP keeps the door open to a move back through $1.40 and toward the $1.60 to $1.70 area where the 50-week EMA sits.
That technical picture is being reinforced by real money flows. XRP ETFs pulled in $3.5 million on Sept. 16 through Franklin Templeton’s XRPZ fund, extending a 10-day inflow streak even as bitcoin and ether funds saw outflows. For a market still hungry for signs of institutional adoption, that divergence matters. It tells you XRP is not just a trading vehicle; it is becoming a relative magnet for capital while larger crypto exposures are being reduced.
The bigger narrative is that XRP is emerging from a highly levered phase into a cleaner market structure just as regulatory and product catalysts remain in play. The CLARITY Act debate has kept optionality alive around U.S. crypto rules, while the XRP Ledger’s performance upgrade and asset-manager interest add a second layer of support. None of that guarantees an immediate breakout, but it does argue that the market may be underpricing the upside if spot buyers keep stepping in as leverage comes out.
That is why this moment matters. XRP is not being rescued by hype; it is being steadied by capital rotation, ETF demand, and a derivatives reset that may be clearing the way for the next trend leg. As long as $1.29 holds, the risk-reward tilts toward patience on the long side, with $1.40 the first confirmation level and a move back toward $1.60 the bigger prize.
