Athens stocks opened modestly higher, with the General Price Index up 0.21% to 2,707.18, as investors bought into energy names and selected large caps despite a mixed broader market.
Athens stocks open higher on energy gains

The move matters because it shows Greek equities holding onto recent gains even as trading remains selective. Turnover reached about 20.4 million euros in the first hour on more than 2.1 million shares, a level that suggests active positioning rather than a thin, unsupported rise.

The FTSE large-cap index also advanced 0.21% to 6,929.52, while the mid-cap FTSEM slipped 0.19% to 3,093.60, underscoring a split between stronger blue chips and weaker smaller names. Breadth was narrow: 39 stocks were higher, 40 lower and 14 unchanged.
Energy shares led the upside, with Galaxy Cosmos Mezz jumping 4.78%, Hellenic Petroleum gaining 3.52% and Motor Oil adding 2.38%. On the downside, Domiki Kritis fell 2.55%, Intertech lost 2.27% and Kekrops dropped 2.08%.
For investors, the pattern points to a market that is still being driven by stock selection and sector rotation rather than broad risk appetite. Refiners and other energy-linked names are attracting bids, while mid-caps continue to lag, leaving the index vulnerable if leadership does not widen.
The next test for Athens will be whether the early bid extends through the session and whether follow-through buying appears outside the energy complex. If turnover stays firm and large caps continue to outperform, the market could build on the opening move; if not, the session risks fading back into the same narrow trading that has defined recent action.
