Spot lithium carbonate in China slid 3,400 yuan a metric ton on October 14 as both buyers and sellers stayed sidelined, underscoring a market still struggling to find a floor despite tighter spot availability.
China Lithium Carbonate Prices Fall on Weak Demand
SMM said battery-grade lithium carbonate was quoted at 104,400 yuan to 112,100 yuan a ton, with an average of 108,250 yuan, while industrial-grade material’s low-end quote fell to 101,400 yuan. Sellers showed little willingness to dump cargoes, but buyers remained in wait-and-see mode, leaving the spot market stagnant and sentiment bearish.
The decline matters because lithium carbonate remains a key input for electric-vehicle batteries and energy storage, so weaker prices usually reflect either softer downstream demand or excess supply — or both. For miners, refiners and battery-material suppliers, sustained price pressure squeezes margins and raises the risk that producers with higher costs are forced to cut output or delay expansion plans.
Futures added to the negative tone. The most-traded lithium carbonate contract, LC2701, reversed after a stronger open and fell as much as 4.34% to close at 100,900 yuan a ton, with open interest rising by 4,909 lots even as prices dropped. That combination typically suggests fresh short positioning or hedging against more downside, rather than conviction that a rebound is imminent.
SMM said the bearish pattern is likely to persist in the short term, though destocking of social inventories and tight spot supply are offering some support. Traders will be watching whether prices can hold the 100,000 yuan level, while any pickup in EV and battery demand — or further policy moves from major producers — could determine how quickly the market stabilizes.
| Entity | Gains | Losses |
|---|---|---|
| Battery makers | ▲Lower input costs | ▼Margin pressure if EV demand stays soft |
| Lithium miners/refiners | ▲Tighter supply support | ▼Spot prices and profitability |
| Short sellers | ▲Downtrend momentum | ▼Risk of rebound on destocking |
| EV and energy storage buyers | ▲Cheaper raw material | ▼Delays if market weakness reflects weak demand |
