Goldman Sachs shares rose after the bank reported third-quarter profit that beat Wall Street expectations, powered by a 70%-plus surge in equity trading revenue that more than offset a slight decline in fixed income, currencies and commodities.
Goldman Sachs Q3 Profit Beats on Equity Trading

The lender said net income climbed 29% from a year earlier to about $5.3 billion, while total revenue rose almost a quarter to nearly $18.7 billion. Investors are rewarding the results because they show Goldman’s trading franchise is still generating outsized earnings even as markets remain choppy and deal activity broadens across investment banking, funds and wealth management.
Equity trading was the clear driver, with revenue jumping to $6.4 billion from a year ago, helping compensate for a marginal fall in bond, currency and commodities trading. Goldman also said investment-banking fees, asset management and wealth management revenue increased, underscoring a broader recovery in fee-generating businesses.
The stock was last up 0.83% at $901.39 in New York. The move came even after the shares had recently traded below their 50-day moving average, and follows a sharp rebound from October lows, reflecting renewed confidence that Goldman can convert market volatility into profits.
For investors, the report reinforces Goldman’s leverage to equity-market activity and IPO pipelines, while keeping attention on whether trading momentum can carry into the next quarter. The next catalyst will be whether the firm can sustain that pace if market volumes ease or if investment-banking fees continue to improve.
