Borsa Istanbul tumbled at the open after MSCI froze some planned changes to Turkey’s equity indexes, stoking worries that the country could face tougher treatment from one of the world’s most watched benchmark providers.
MSCI freezes Turkey index changes after trading concerns

The BIST 100 fell 1.44% to 11,896.08 in early trading, deepening the previous day’s 0.40% decline and dragging banking shares down 1.48% and holding companies 1.42%. The sharpest slide in the session was in financial leasing and factoring stocks, which dropped 6.52%, while only investment trusts posted a gain.

The selloff matters because MSCI benchmarks help steer billions of dollars in passive and active flows. Any change to Turkey’s standing in the MSCI universe could alter index weights, force portfolio rebalancing and hit foreign demand for local equities at a time when market liquidity is already vulnerable.
MSCI said it was pausing certain Turkey index changes until further notice after investors raised concerns during its 2026 market classification review about coordinated trading through funds tied to some small-cap names. The index compiler said such activity could undermine the reliability of free-float calculations and market integrity.
The freeze also keeps alive the possibility that MSCI could open consultation on removing Turkey from emerging markets status by June 2027 if it sees insufficient progress. That would be a significant blow for Turkish stocks, potentially reducing their eligibility for benchmarked capital and widening the discount investors demand for risk.
Local markets are also bracing for a late-day assessment from S&P Global, which is expected to leave Turkey’s sovereign rating at BB- with a stable outlook. Traders are watching that call for any shift in sentiment after a year in which Turkey has worked to stabilize financial conditions and rebuild confidence.
For investors, the immediate question is whether the MSCI decision is a temporary procedural pause or the first step toward a broader reassessment of Turkey’s investability. The key support levels for the BIST 100 are seen at 11,800 and 11,700, with 12,000 and 12,100 acting as near-term resistance.
