Nigerian equities extended their slide on Friday, wiping N262 billion off market value as weakness in large and medium-cap stocks kept pressure on the Nigerian Exchange.
Nigeria stocks fall as NGX sheds N262 billion

The All-Share Index fell 403.40 points, or 0.16%, to 250,808.27, while market capitalization closed at N162.843 trillion. The drop underscores how quickly risk appetite has faded in a market that has been prone to sharp rotations after recent gains.
Losses in Nigerian Exchange Group, First Holdco, PZ Cussons Nigeria, Zichis Agro Allied Industries and Unilever Nigeria drove the decline, showing that the downturn was not confined to a single sector. PZ Cussons Nigeria led laggards, sliding 9.91% to N66.40, while eTranzact International dropped 9.84% to N11.00 and Zichis Agro Allied Industries lost 8.29% to N18.25.
Trading was active but thinner in value terms, with volume down 46.19% to 557.15 million shares and turnover off 48.60% to N27.57 billion, even as deal count rose 20.20% to 53,450. That split suggests investors were still rotating positions, but at smaller ticket sizes and with less conviction behind the market’s direction.
The session was balanced on the surface, with 26 gainers matching 26 losers, but the biggest winners were concentrated in lower-priced names such as AIICO Insurance and Trans-Nationwide Express, both up 10%. That kind of advance often does little to offset declines in heavier stocks that have more influence on the benchmark.
For investors, the key issue is whether Friday’s weakness marks a broader cooling in sentiment or just another bout of profit-taking after recent strength. Cowry Asset Management expects the market to resume an upward trend on strong buying interest, though it warned that profit-taking could slow any rebound.
