The Provincial Council of Ourense is set to bring a €7.78 million budget modification to its finance committee, with more than €6.3 million earmarked for municipal cooperation across the province’s smaller towns.
Ourense Council Plans €7.78M Budget Change
The package matters because it directs fresh spending power toward local infrastructure, public services and fire prevention in a province where most municipalities have fewer than 20,000 residents and rely heavily on provincial support to maintain basic investment levels. The council says the plan covers 184 actions across 91 municipalities and one local association, giving the measure broad reach rather than concentrating funds in a few larger centers.
Nearly €4.93 million of the municipal allocation will go through credit supplements for projects including senior housing, home rehabilitation, sports and cultural facilities, road paving, street upgrades, machinery purchases, energy efficiency, water catchments, supply and sanitation works, public lighting and tourism-related environmental improvements. Another €1.44 million is set aside under an agreement with the regional rural affairs department to finance firefighting equipment for municipalities in 2026, including tractors for 11 towns and one mancomunidad.
The modification also allocates about €589,647 for the council’s own operations, mainly higher electricity costs, while nearly €790,000 will cover commitments to Meisa. A further €34,000 goes to cooperation works with the city of Ourense, including extensions to three current projects and a new upgrade plan for the municipal auditorium.
Beyond the budget change, the council is also processing the supply of 97 benches and five bus shelters for 20 municipalities under a co-financed urban furniture program. For local governments, the immediate gain is access to investment they would struggle to fund alone; for the provincial treasury, the risk is higher spending pressure as energy costs, infrastructure needs and emergency preparedness all compete for resources.
The next focus will be the finance committee meeting, where the proposal advances through the council’s budget process and sets the tone for how aggressively Ourense will deploy higher revenues into local investment in the months ahead.
