Solana is under pressure from institutional selling just days before its biggest network upgrade, with spot ETFs logging their 11th outflow day in October as investors trim exposure despite the coming Alpenglow launch.
Solana ETF Outflows Before Alpenglow Upgrade
SOL traded around $104 on Oct. 18, down nearly 15% over the past 10 days from about $121, while spot Solana ETFs shed $12.67 million on Oct. 16, according to SoSoValue. That left total ETF net assets at $1.62 billion, a sign that the market is not waiting for the upgrade to prove itself before taking profits.
The timing matters because Anza has confirmed Alpenglow for Oct. 21, a protocol overhaul that is set to replace TowerBFT and cut transaction finality from 12.8 seconds to about 150 milliseconds. For traders, that is the clearest near-term catalyst Solana has had in months; for the network, it is an attempt to strengthen its case as a faster, more scalable alternative in a crowded layer-1 market.
But price action has been weak even as the technical narrative improves. On Oct. 18, SOL’s relative strength index was 18.8, deep in oversold territory, while the token sat below its 50-day moving average of $109.32 and far above its 200-day average of $87.57, showing a market caught between short-term liquidation and longer-term trend support.
The selloff has also come alongside broader risk-off conditions, with hot inflation data on Oct. 15 pressuring crypto markets and dragging down Solana, Ethereum and XRP at the same time. Adalytica’s Bitcoin Fear & Greed Index showed sentiment at 27, or Fear, even as awareness remained elevated at 73, a mix that typically reflects heavy attention but weak conviction.
For investors, the question is whether ETF outflows and profit-taking are front-running the upgrade or signaling deeper caution about how much of the good news is already priced in. The next test is whether Alpenglow can translate faster finality into sustained inflows and stronger spot demand, or whether institutions continue to use strength to reduce exposure after a sharp run-up earlier in the year.
| Entity | Gains | Losses |
|---|---|---|
| Short-term sellers | ▲Lock in recent gains | ▼Miss upside if upgrade lifts SOL |
| Long-term Solana holders | ▲Potentially better network performance | ▼Endure ETF outflows and volatility |
| Solana network | ▲Faster finality, stronger utility | ▼Market skepticism before launch |
| Competing layer-1 tokens | ▲Relative attention during SOL weakness | ▼Lose if Alpenglow revives Solana demand |
