Borsa Istanbul’s main index shook off a sharp intraday drop and closed just shy of fresh highs, a sign that buyers are still willing to step in even after weeks of turbulence in Turkish markets.
BIST 100 Rebounds to Near Fresh Highs
The BIST 100 ended the session up 1.88% at 10,961.67 after sliding as low as 10,620 during the day, with turnover reaching a record 112.8 billion lira. For investors, that combination matters: it shows both resilience in risk appetite and serious liquidity returning to the market, two ingredients that often fuel durable breakouts when confidence starts to rebuild.
Banks led the rebound, climbing 4.24%, while holding companies rose 2.12%. Transportation stocks were the best performers, jumping 6.80%, as the market latched onto the global improvement in sentiment. The broad move higher came alongside gains in overseas equities, helped by hopes of lower oil prices on signs of progress around a U.S.-Iran agreement and a recovery in technology shares.
That global backdrop is important because Turkey’s market has been under pressure. The BIST 100 had fallen 25% over seven weeks amid a scandal tied to alleged manipulation in investment funds and a crackdown that has rattled trust in the financial system. When a market that has been bruised by governance concerns manages to bounce with heavy volume, it often tells you that long-only investors are starting to distinguish between short-term noise and long-term opportunity.
Still, this is not a straight-line story. The index’s ability to hold above 10,900 and challenge the 11,100-11,200 area will depend on what comes next for inflation data, domestic policy credibility and foreign risk sentiment. A clean break above those levels would strengthen the case that the recent selloff was more of a reset than a structural break.
For long-term investors, the bigger message is that volatility is doing what volatility often does in emerging markets: it is creating dispersion. Stronger balance sheets, liquid names and sectors tied to domestic financial flows can recover quickly when confidence returns. That does not mean rushing in blindly, but it does mean the BIST 100 deserves to stay on the watchlist as a market with powerful upside if trust continues to rebuild.
