BNB is trading near its highs for the year, but the bigger story is that Binance’s latest U.S. money-laundering scrutiny keeps the token’s risk premium elevated, even as the coin ranks as the world’s fourth-largest cryptocurrency by market value.
BNB Nears Highs as Binance Probe Keeps Risk High

The native token of BNB Chain has climbed 240% over the past three years and recently changed hands around $772, with a 69.1 RSI reading and a price sitting above both its 50-day and 200-day moving averages. That strength has not erased the central investment problem: BNB’s demand is still heavily tied to Binance, the exchange that sits at the center of a fresh federal probe.
On Sept. 14, the U.S. Department of Justice said it moved to seize about $61 million in crypto funds tied to Iranian oil sales, alleging two China-based companies laundered the proceeds through Binance trading accounts. Binance is not named as a defendant, and it denied wrongdoing in earlier reports, but the case follows a familiar pattern for the exchange.
In February, a Senate subcommittee asked Binance for records on the same two firms, saying the company “appears to have ignored warnings and recommendations” to prevent Iranian money laundering schemes. That matters because Binance’s legal overhang is not just reputational; it can limit institutional comfort with BNB and keep banks, funds and other regulated buyers at arm’s length.
Binance already paid $4.3 billion in 2023 after pleading guilty to anti-money-laundering and sanctions violations. With the exchange still processing massive volume — $11.4 trillion in the first half of 2026 — any new enforcement action would be large enough to rattle sentiment across the wider crypto market, even if BNB Chain’s burn mechanism is independent of the exchange itself.
That independence offers some buffer, but not enough to remove the headline risk. For investors, the question is whether a token linked so tightly to the world’s most controversial crypto venue deserves a premium when a cleaner large-cap alternative can offer similar upside without the same regulatory baggage.
If the DOJ case deepens or Congress keeps pressing Binance, BNB could remain vulnerable to sudden de-rating despite its technical strength. The next catalyst is whether U.S. authorities broaden the probe or add formal charges that bring Binance back into the dock.
