Canal+ Group’s rapid acquisition spree is giving the French media company more scale, more content and a larger global audience, but Anna Marsh says the real value is speed: in a market being reshaped by AI, streaming and collapsing pay-TV boundaries, there is “just no room for error.”
Canal+ Adds MultiChoice and UGC Stakes
That is why the group’s recent dealmaking matters. Canal+ has moved fast across Europe and Africa this year, buying a majority stake in Rome-based Lucky Red, taking a 34% stake in Paris studio UGC and completing a $2 billion takeover of South African pay-TV operator MultiChoice. The purchases have lifted Canal+’s subscriber base to more than 40 million, with more than half now English-speaking, expanding the company’s reach well beyond its French core.
For investors, the story is less about trophy assets than about whether Canal+ can turn scale into durable earnings in a sector where audience fragmentation and rising content costs are squeezing margins. Marsh, deputy CEO and chief content officer, said entering new markets such as South Africa only works if the group backs expansion with a strong content strategy, underscoring how acquisition-led growth still depends on execution.
The broader industry backdrop is one of consolidation and heightened competition. Marsh pointed to the “enormous consolidation” in the U.S. and the blurring line between pay TV and free TV, while also highlighting the growing importance of Europe as a production hub and of existing intellectual property, such as book adaptations and established franchises, in reducing risk.
The challenge is that the market is moving quickly enough to punish mistakes. Marsh said audiences, especially Gen Z viewers, are getting harder to win over, making content decisions more expensive and more unforgiving even as Canal+ leans on deals to broaden its footprint. The next test will be whether the company’s newly enlarged platform can convert that scale into hit programming and subscriber growth as it integrates its latest acquisitions.
