ChatGPT image trend lifts AI engagement as sentiment falls

ChatGPT’s new image-making trick is turning social feeds into a stream of dreamy AI art, but the craze is colliding with a sharp swing in market sentiment that has left investors cautious on the broader artificial-intelligence trade.
The viral uptake matters because it shows how quickly generative AI can move from productivity tool to mass-market consumer feature, widening engagement for OpenAI’s products and reinforcing demand for the chip, cloud and software stack behind them. It also highlights the other side of the trade: enthusiasm for AI usage remains high, while sentiment around AI names has cooled fast.

Adalytica’s AI sentiment gauge shows “Extreme Fear” at 14, down 64% over seven days and 27% over 30 days, even as awareness sits at 89, labeled “Extreme Greed.” That divergence points to a market still heavily focused on AI, but increasingly skeptical about near-term upside or valuation support.
The split is visible across the megacap AI complex. NVIDIA’s earnings sentiment is at 29, in “Fear” territory, with awareness at 86. Microsoft’s earnings sentiment is neutral at 36, but awareness is at 100, underscoring how tightly investors are watching companies tied to AI demand, compute spending and model deployment.

For investors, the takeaway is that AI’s consumer momentum is still strong enough to drive engagement and product stickiness, but the trade is no longer getting a free pass. As the AI art trend spreads, the next catalyst will be whether it translates into paid usage, higher cloud consumption or fresh monetization — or whether it remains a short-lived social media phenomenon that does little to justify lofty expectations.
