Egyptian shares ended the week higher on Thursday, with the benchmark EGX30 rising 1.52% as local investors bought into the market even as Arab and foreign funds turned net sellers, underscoring a domestic-led bid in a volatile global risk backdrop.
Egyptian shares rise as local investors buy

The rally lifted the market’s capitalisation to 4.051 trillion pounds and extended gains across the broader tape, with the EGX70 small- and mid-cap index up 0.82% and the EGX100 adding 0.8%. The outperformance suggests Egyptian equities remain supported by local liquidity even as overseas investors trim exposure amid choppy international markets.
That divergence matters because foreign flows remain an important marginal driver of price action in emerging markets, especially when global risk appetite weakens. With Asian markets under pressure and Wall Street still digesting recent turbulence, the fact that Egyptian equities advanced despite net selling by Arab and foreign investors points to some resilience in domestic demand. It also hints that local institutions and retail buyers are willing to use dips to add exposure, at least for now.
The session’s gains were broad enough to reach the main size and style segments. The EGX30 capped-weighted gauge rose 1.32%, the total return version climbed 1.51%, and the Sharia-compliant and low-volatility indices also finished in positive territory. That breadth is important to investors because it suggests the move was not confined to a handful of heavyweight names.
Still, the flow data shows the rally was not universally embraced. Arab investors sold a net 15.712 million pounds, while foreigners sold 54.924 million pounds, leaving Egyptian buyers to absorb the supply with net purchases of 70.636 million pounds. For investors, that creates a familiar two-track message: the market can rise on domestic support, but sustained upside is likely to depend on whether foreign money stabilises as global volatility cools and the dollar’s recent weakness settles into a clearer trend.
For now, Egypt’s market is tracking better than the wider risk environment, but the durability of the move will depend on whether local buying can keep overpowering external outflows.
