Federal Bank posted a record quarterly profit of ₹1,386 crore in the September quarter, rising 45% from a year earlier as India’s mid-sized lenders continue to benefit from cleaner balance sheets, stronger fee income and brisk loan growth.
Federal Bank posts record Q2 profit, NPAs fall

The earnings beat matters because it shows Federal Bank is not relying on margin expansion alone to drive profit. While net interest margin slipped slightly to 3.32% from 3.33% in the previous quarter, the bank offset that with a record ₹1,490 crore in other income, up nearly 38%, and a 15% rise in interest income to ₹7,721 crore.
Asset quality was the biggest support. Gross non-performing assets fell to 1.32%, a decade low, from 1.52% in the previous quarter, while net NPAs improved to 0.17%. Fresh slippages dropped 27.48% year on year, and the provision coverage ratio climbed to 86.78%, giving the lender more room to absorb stress if credit conditions weaken.
Loan growth also stayed strong enough to keep investors focused on scale. Net advances rose 22% to ₹2.49 lakh crore, matching total deposits, which also climbed 16% to ₹2.49 lakh crore. CASA balances increased 26.63% to ₹1.09 lakh crore, pushing the CASA ratio up to 32.04% and helping support low-cost funding.
The results add to a broader pattern across Indian banks this earnings season, where lenders with improving credit quality and lower provisions are outpacing peers. Axis Bank has already reported a 38% jump in profit on lower provisions, while Federal Bank’s numbers reinforce the view that private banks with healthier deposit franchises can keep compounding earnings even without a sharp rise in margins.
Managing director and chief executive K. V. S. Maniyan said the bank is exploring investment opportunities across financial services, including core and universal banking, hinting at a broader strategic push beyond standard lending growth. He also flagged the agricultural book for closer monitoring as El Niño risk builds, though he said the bank has not yet seen any material impact on slippages.
For investors, the key question now is whether Federal Bank can sustain this earnings momentum without sacrificing credit quality or margin stability. The next test will be whether deposit growth and fee income stay strong through the second half while the rural book remains contained.
