GIFT Nifty’s open interest hitting an all-time high of 4.78 lakh contracts is more than a trading milestone — it is another sign that India’s equity market is becoming increasingly investable, liquid and globally connected.
GIFT Nifty open interest hits record 4.78 lakh

For investors, that matters because deep, active derivatives markets are often a prerequisite for institutional participation. The bigger the open interest and turnover, the easier it becomes for hedgers, funds and arbitrage traders to express views on India without facing punishing slippage. In practical terms, that can improve price discovery, tighten spreads and strengthen GIFT City’s case as a serious offshore gateway to Indian risk.
According to NSE International Exchange, the contracts outstanding were valued at $21.74 billion on Oct. 22, a record for the benchmark linked to Indian equities. Since full-scale operations began on July 3, 2023, cumulative trading volume has crossed 78.12 million contracts, with turnover reaching $3.61 trillion by Oct. 22, 2026.
That growth helps explain why GIFT Nifty has become an important barometer for global sentiment toward Indian stocks. It gives overseas investors a regulated venue to trade India-linked exposure, while also reinforcing the role of GIFT City in the country’s push to build an international financial services hub. The exchange says its platform also offers single-stock derivatives, currency products, depository receipts and global stocks, broadening the ecosystem beyond one flagship contract.
The development also lands at a time when global markets remain highly sensitive to cross-border capital flows, currency moves and macro uncertainty. In that environment, a larger, more active India-linked derivatives market can matter to portfolio managers who want efficient hedging tools, and to long-term investors who value a market that is gradually becoming more accessible to global money.
There are still risks. Derivatives activity can be volatile, and records in open interest do not automatically translate into stronger corporate earnings or a straight line higher for the underlying market. But the longer-term takeaway is hard to ignore: India is steadily building the market plumbing needed to support a larger investor base.
For investors, that makes GIFT Nifty worth watching as a structural story, not just a daily market headline. The more this ecosystem deepens, the more attractive India becomes for patient capital looking for durable growth over the next several years.
