India’s coal loading to the power sector climbed steadily over four days, a sign officials are trying to relieve pressure on thermal plants after weeks of concern about low inventories and supply disruption. The ministry said loading rose from 370 rakes on Sept. 3 to 444 rakes on Sept. 6, with a 31-rake jump in a single day, as the government and Coal India push to stabilize fuel deliveries.
India coal rake loading rises for power sector

The increase matters because coal remains the backbone of India’s electricity system, and tight stock levels can quickly translate into lower output, grid stress and higher costs for power producers and state utilities. The ministry said critical thermal plants — those with stock below 25% of normative requirement — are being closely monitored, with corrective supply measures already in place.

Coal India Limited and its subsidiaries drove most of the improvement, alongside Singareni Collieries and captive mine operators. Mahanadi Coalfields Ltd. posted the biggest one-day increase, up 12 rakes to 111 a day, while captive block loading rose 6 rakes to 72 and Bharat Coking Coal added 8 to 25.
Other units also contributed: Northern Coalfields rose 3 rakes to 35, private washery and goods shed loading increased 3 to 42, Central Coalfields and South Eastern Coalfields added 2 and 1 rakes respectively, and total CIL siding loading climbed to 305 rakes a day. Eastern Coalfields and Western Coalfields held steady at 23 and 29 rakes.
For investors, the data is a reminder that India’s thermal coal market is still highly sensitive to logistics and stock management, even as power demand remains robust. A sustained pickup in rake loading supports utilities and reduces the risk of acute shortages, while it also backs the near-term outlook for domestic coal producers and rail-linked supply chains.
The next test is whether the improvement holds through the coming days and into higher plant burn, especially if demand stays firm and weather-related disruptions fade. If loading slows again, the shortage narrative could quickly re-emerge.
| Entity | Gains | Losses |
|---|---|---|
| Coal India and subsidiaries | ▲Higher rake loading | ▼Inventory pressure eases less quickly if trend stalls |
| Thermal power plants | ▲Better coal replenishment | ▼Still vulnerable to low stocks |
| Power utilities and grid operators | ▲Lower supply disruption risk | ▼Need close monitoring of critical plants |
| Rail-linked coal logistics | ▲Higher freight volumes | ▼Operational strain if demand rises faster |
