Indian equities extended their selloff on October 19, with the Sensex losing 490 points and the Nifty slipping to 23,003.95 as heavyweight IT, FMCG and private bank stocks came under pressure amid persistent foreign outflows, higher volatility and weak global cues.
Indian equities fall as banks and IT stocks weaken

The decline matters because it comes at a time when the market is trying to defend key psychological levels. A softer rupee, a jump in India VIX and continued selling by foreign institutional investors are making investors more cautious, while rising crude prices are keeping inflation and margin concerns alive.
The Sensex closed at 74,239, down 490.27 points or 0.66%, while the Nifty fell 142.20 points or 0.61%. Market breadth was negative, with about 2,557 shares declining versus 1,250 advancing, and midcaps and smallcaps also finished lower.
Private banks were the biggest drag in sector trading, even as PSU banks outperformed. The Nifty Private Bank index fell 1.45%, while Bank Nifty dropped 0.57% to 55,527.10. Axis Bank slid 3.81%, HDFC Bank lost 2.06% and ICICI Bank fell 0.46%, outweighing gains in PSU lenders such as Federal Bank, Bank of Baroda and Indian Bank.
IT and FMCG also weighed on the benchmarks. Infosys fell 2.14%, while HUL and Trent were among the top losers, adding to pressure on the consumer side. The BSE FMCG index dropped nearly 1%, underscoring investor concern that slower demand and margin strain may limit earnings upside in the near term.
The broader market was weaker too, with the Nifty Midcap index down 0.3% and the Nifty Smallcap index off 0.7%. India VIX rose 2.42% to 14.40, pointing to higher expectations of near-term swings as traders brace for more volatility.
The move lower came despite pockets of strength in oil and gas, autos and infrastructure. UltraTech Cement, Eicher Motors, ONGC, Maruti Suzuki and L&T were among the gainers, but they were not enough to offset losses in financials and consumer stocks.
For investors, the key issue is whether domestic support can absorb ongoing foreign selling. With crude still elevated, earnings season underway and volatility rising, traders will watch if the Nifty can hold around 23,000 or if another round of outflows pushes the index lower.
