Romania’s main stock index rose for a fourth session in a row on Friday, with Banca Transilvania doing most of the heavy lifting as investors kept rotating into the market’s most liquid blue chips despite a volatile global backdrop.
Romania BET rises for fourth session on Banca Transilvania
The BET index gained 0.62% to 34,707.82 points, its best run in several sessions and a sign that domestic equities are still drawing support even as Wall Street sees sharp swings. The broader BET-XT climbed 0.63%, while turnover of 86.23 million lei was respectable for an October session, though still below the 100 million lei-plus volume often seen when the uptrend gathers speed.
That matters because the move was not broad-based speculation; it was concentrated in the names that usually set the tone for Bucharest. Banca Transilvania rose 1.52% to 35.98 lei on 19.19 million lei of trades, making it the day’s clear market engine. When the biggest bank in the index leads, it typically pulls in passive flows, improves sentiment across financials and helps keep the benchmark bid.
The advance also suggests investors are willing to look through Romania’s mixed macro picture for now. The economy is still wrestling with high inflation, a wide trade deficit and budget pressure, but local equities continue to benefit from domestic liquidity and the market’s relatively low global ownership base. In that setup, Romania can outperform when local institutions, dividend seekers and index-following money step in together.
Energy stocks were mixed, showing that the rally was selective rather than euphoric. Romgaz slipped 0.63% and OMV Petrom gained 0.46%, while Hidroelectrica added 0.44% and Premier Energy surged 3.58%. Digi Communications rose 1.22% and Electrica jumped 3.35%, reinforcing the idea that investors are still chasing balance-sheet strength, yield and predictable cash flow.
For investors, the message is straightforward: the BET’s fourth straight rise is less about a single macro catalyst than about an index increasingly being carried by a few high-quality, high-liquidity names. That can sustain the rally in the near term, but it also makes the market more dependent on continued buying in banks and utilities. If Banca Transilvania keeps leading and turnover expands, the next leg higher in Bucharest could come quickly.
The better trade here is to stay focused on the market’s toll roads: banks, utilities and the strongest dividend payers. In a choppy global tape, Romania’s benchmark is showing that selective domestic inflows can still overpower external noise — and that is exactly where the asymmetric opportunity sits.
