XRP’s latest surge is being driven less by day-to-day crypto trading and more by a potentially important political and regulatory opening: Ripple chief executive Brad Garlinghouse met with Donald Trump, just as the token posted a roughly 30% gain over the past week and broke higher on unusually heavy volume.

For investors, that matters because XRP has long traded as a bet on whether Ripple can win broader institutional acceptance in U.S. finance. A friendlier political backdrop, or even the perception of one, can move the market quickly when a token is still trying to shake off years of legal uncertainty and regain credibility with larger buyers.
The price action has been striking. XRP climbed to $1.54 on Aug. 22 from $1.10 just three days earlier, with volume topping 10.7 billion tokens, a sign that traders are piling in aggressively rather than waiting for a clean regulatory resolution. The token’s relative strength index has run up to 89.9, which is deep into overheated territory by conventional technical indicators, suggesting the move may have gotten ahead of itself in the short term.
Still, momentum often matters in crypto more than it does in traditional markets, and Ripple has been steadily trying to build a more durable case for XRP. The company is pushing deeper into institutional payments and credit infrastructure, including upgrades to the XRP Ledger aimed at tapping the $10 billion private credit market. That kind of real-world utility is what long-term holders want to see, because it gives the token a use case beyond speculation.
There is also a clear market divide. Bulls see a possible shift in Washington and a pathway to wider adoption if Ripple’s political access translates into policy relief. Skeptics see a crowded, volatile trade that remains highly sensitive to headlines, especially given the still-fragile regulatory backdrop and the mixed evidence from ETF flows.
Coinbase, which tends to benefit from a broader rally in crypto trading activity, has also moved higher alongside the token, while MicroStrategy remains a separate but important barometer for appetite toward digital assets more broadly. When XRP gains this fast, it usually lifts the whole crypto complex — but it can just as quickly reverse if enthusiasm outruns fundamentals.
For long-term investors, the real question is not whether XRP can keep sprinting for another week, but whether Ripple can convert political access, institutional partnerships and network growth into a lasting competitive advantage. That will take time, probably years, not days. For now, XRP is back on the watchlist — but after a 30% weekly run and a very stretched technical picture, patience still looks like the smarter move.
