XRP is trying to hold the $1.40 handle as traders add derivatives exposure and position for a possible break above $1.42, a move that could reopen the path toward $1.50 and $1.70.
XRP Holds $1.40 as Traders Eye $1.42 Breakout
The token fell about 1% on Tuesday to $1.39 after buyers defended support at $1.38, but the market structure remains constructive for now. XRP is still trading above its key moving averages, and the immediate test is whether bulls can convert $1.40 into support and push through a descending trendline around $1.42.
That level matters because the latest rejection near $1.50 showed sellers are still active, but the broader setup has not broken down. The relative strength index is near 46, showing momentum has cooled from the stronger readings seen earlier in the rally, while the MACD remains positive but has narrowed, a sign the advance is losing some speed.
Derivatives positioning is providing some support. XRP perpetual futures open interest edged up to 2.24 billion tokens from 2.23 billion the previous day, according to CoinGlass, while the open-interest-weighted funding rate stayed positive at about 0.01%, meaning longs are still paying to stay in the trade.
That combination points to traders remaining willing to lean bullish even after the recent stall. It also raises the risk of a sharper unwind if XRP fails again at $1.42, because crowded long positioning can speed up liquidations on a downside break.
Broader crypto sentiment remains firm enough to help risk assets. The Crypto Fear and Greed Index was at 69, in “Greed” territory, though slightly below the prior day’s 71, suggesting investors are still willing to buy dips but may become more vulnerable to profit-taking if XRP cannot clear resistance.
For investors, the setup is straightforward: a daily close above $1.42 would strengthen the case for a move back toward $1.50, with $1.70 next on the chart, while failure to break that barrier would leave $1.38 and the 200-day exponential moving average near $1.36 exposed.
