Aluminum prices are consolidating on both the Shanghai and London markets as a slowing pace of inventory drawdown in China collides with weaker downstream buying and a mixed macro backdrop that is keeping longs and shorts in balance.
The most-traded SHFE aluminum 2612 contract closed at 23,280 yuan a metric ton, down 0.36%, after trading below its 5-day, 10-day, 30-day and 60-day moving averages, while LME three-month aluminum ended at $3,062.5 a ton, down 0.18%. Both contracts remain in narrow ranges, with SHFE seen between 23,000 yuan and 23,600 yuan a ton and LME between $2,990 and $3,100 a ton.
The key economic signal is not a collapse in demand, but a loss of momentum. China’s aluminum ingot social inventory fell to 547,000 tons, down 2,000 tons from Thursday and 6,000 tons from a week earlier, but the pace of destocking is easing just as the seasonal peak period winds down. At the same time, some regions are reporting softer downstream processing demand and the share of liquid aluminum slipped 0.44 percentage point week on week, suggesting end-user appetite is no longer strong enough to force a sustained price breakout.
Spot trading reflects that hesitation. In eastern China, premiums over SHFE aluminum eased as selling picked up and bargaining intensified; in the center of the country, transactions were mostly at a discount of 60 yuan to 80 yuan a ton to the front-month contract. In southern China, premiums held in the 110 yuan to 150 yuan range, but traders also reported selling into rallies as buyers turned more cautious on higher prices.
Macro news is adding to the indecision. New nationwide tax penalty standards took effect on Nov. 1, tightening and standardizing enforcement across 66 violation items, while market participants also continue to track geopolitical risks around the Strait of Hormuz after Iranian officials floated a two-day compliance plan linked to reopening the waterway. Those developments matter because aluminum is highly sensitive to energy costs, logistics and broader risk appetite, especially when interest-rate expectations are shifting again and industrial activity signals remain uneven.
For investors, the setup favors range trading over trend chasing. Technical indicators show SHFE aluminum failing to regain key moving averages, while LME aluminum is also capped below its short-, medium- and long-term averages. That keeps the focus on whether inventories keep falling fast enough to tighten the market, or whether slackening demand and fresh supply growth from China and abroad force prices back toward the lower end of their ranges.
China’s secondary aluminum and scrap markets reinforce the same theme: costs are firm, but demand is not strong enough to generate a clean upside move. Compliance-driven tax scrutiny is tightening supply of invoiced scrap and supporting ADC12 and tense scrap prices, yet wrought scrap is under pressure from inventories and cautious buying, underscoring a market that is mixed rather than bullish.
The next catalyst is whether downstream restocking returns before year-end or whether the slowdown in destocking becomes a more decisive signal that the aluminum market has moved from tightening to consolidation.
