Amazon.com Inc. has announced a reduction of less than 10% of its workforce in Singapore as part of its decision to wind down its Fresh grocery delivery service and local seller operations, effective July 5, 2026. This strategic move reflects the company's ongoing adjustments in response to shifting consumer preferences and the competitive landscape in the grocery sector. The cuts are primarily focused on operational and backend roles, indicating a recalibration of resources as Amazon seeks to streamline its operations in the region. The announcement comes at a time when market sentiment is mixed, with investors closely monitoring the company's performance amid broader economic trends that have shown signs of cooling. Recent data indicates a decline in growth momentum, and such workforce reductions may be viewed as a necessary step to enhance operational efficiency in an increasingly challenging environment. Despite these cuts, Amazon continues to maintain a strong market presence, although the move could stir discussions regarding its long-term strategy in the grocery segment, particularly in Asia, where competition has intensified.
