Arla’s chocolate protein drink has won Sweden’s Grocery Product of the Year 2026 after a 64% sales surge, underscoring how protein-led repositioning is winning over shoppers in one of the Nordics’ most competitive food categories.
Arla Proteinshake wins Sweden Grocery Product of 2026
The product, sold in Sweden as Arla Proteinshake with chocolate flavor, generated 57.8 million kronor in sales in the 52 weeks through April 2026, according to NIQ data cited by Svensk Dagligvaruhandel. It also reached 89% weighted distribution and a 5.3% share in flavored milk, giving Arla a clear commercial foothold in a category where shelf space and repeat purchases matter.
The win matters because it shows the protein trend is moving beyond bars and sports nutrition into everyday grocery baskets. For Arla, the award validates a strategy of rebranding an existing chocolate milk drink under the Arla Protein banner and emphasizing its nutritional profile rather than launching a completely new formula.
That repositioning appears to have broadened appeal. The drink contains 5.7 grams of protein per 100 grams in its 500-gram bottle, while a larger 1-liter version introduced in 2026 carries 57 grams of protein overall. It is also lactose-free and free of colorings and preservatives, attributes that help it fit the premium, health-conscious segment driving grocery innovation.
Arla beat final contenders Nocco Focus Grand Sour and Frödinge Saffranskladdkaka, with the winner chosen by votes from members of Svensk Dagligvaruhandel and Dagligvaruleverantörers Förbund rather than sales alone. Frödinge posted the steepest percentage growth among the finalists, while Nocco brought 128.1 million kronor in sales in its segment, showing how crowded Sweden’s functional-food race has become.
The award also brings Arla exposure through grocery trade channels and 400,000 kronor to spend with NIQ, adding a practical marketing boost on top of the prestige. For investors and competitors, the message is that consumer demand for high-protein convenience products remains strong, and brands that can translate that demand into distribution and repeat buying are still gaining share.
The next test is whether Arla can keep the momentum as the protein category matures and rivals push harder for the same shelf space. Any further product expansion, retail placement gains or category shifts in Swedish grocery sales will show whether this is a one-off hit or a longer-term consumer trend.
