BMW’s battery production playbook built in Debrecen has become a global template, with the carmaker starting sixth-generation cell output in China after proving the system in Hungary and Germany.
BMW starts Gen6 battery production in China

The move matters because Gen6 batteries sit at the heart of BMW’s next wave of electric vehicles, including the Neue Klasse lineup, and the company is betting that local production in key markets will cut logistics costs, reduce supply-chain risk and speed up EV launches. BMW says the new cylindrical cells offer more than 20% higher energy density than the previous generation, with charging times and range improving by as much as 30%.
Production has now begun in Shenyang, completing the first three sites in BMW’s global Gen6 manufacturing network after Debrecen and Irlbach-Straßkirchen in Germany. The automaker said the Chinese ramp shows how quickly it is rolling out the technology across its footprint, and it is preparing two more sites in the US and Mexico for serial production in the coming months.
For investors, the significance goes beyond battery chemistry. BMW is trying to turn manufacturing execution into a competitive advantage in the electric SUV race, where German premium brands are fighting for scale and margin against Tesla and Chinese rivals. Localized battery production also helps protect against shipping bottlenecks and geopolitical friction at a time when automakers are reworking supply chains across Europe, China and North America.
The Debrecen plant is already feeding that strategy, with BMW pointing to digital quality control, digital twins and AI-assisted inspection to keep output consistent as it expands the platform globally. The company said the new cells use a cell-to-pack design and are governed by its in-house Energy Master control unit, both of which are intended to improve packaging efficiency and adaptability across models.
BMW’s next test is whether the Neue Klasse rollout can convert that manufacturing lead into stronger EV sales and better margins, especially as demand in China remains uneven and premium carmakers face intensifying pressure on pricing and volumes.
