BMW is bringing the fifth-generation X5 to Panama, using the Panama Motor Show 2026 to showcase a more digital, more powerful version of one of its core luxury SUVs as it tries to defend premium pricing in a tougher regional market.
BMW X5 Debuts at Panama Motor Show 2026

The new model matters because the X5 sits near the center of BMW’s profit pool: it is the kind of high-margin SUV that helps the company absorb rising technology and electrification costs across its lineup. In a segment where buyers are increasingly comparing performance, equipment and price, BMW is leaning on product breadth and brand cachet to keep affluent customers from drifting to cheaper rivals.
The X5 40i M Sport Pro on display in Panama comes with a 3.0-liter inline-six TwinPower Turbo engine producing 394 horsepower and 540 Nm of torque, paired with an eight-speed automatic transmission and xDrive all-wheel drive. BMW says the SUV can go from 0 to 100 km/h in 5.3 seconds and reach 250 km/h.
BMW is also pitching the model as a technology showcase. The cabin features BMW Panoramic iDrive, BMW Panoramic Vision, a 17.9-inch center display and BMW Operating System X, alongside the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant. Equipment includes 22-inch M aerodynamic wheels, a panoramic glass roof, ventilated and massaging front seats, adaptive air suspension, BMW Digital Key, Driving Assistant Plus, a 3D head-up display and a 360-degree camera.
For investors, the launch underscores BMW’s strategy of protecting margins with premium content rather than chasing volume alone. That is especially relevant as competition intensifies in large SUVs, where rivals are pressing price and value propositions, forcing legacy automakers to justify higher sticker prices with software, driving aids and upscale hardware.
The Panama debut also highlights BMW’s push to use regional motor shows to keep the brand visible in Latin America, where premium demand is smaller but can still be profitable. The new X5 will be on display at the Panama Convention Center in Amador from Oct. 2-4 and Oct. 7-11, giving BMW a showcase window to court buyers as the luxury SUV fight widens.
