Citi’s higher bitcoin target matters because it puts a major Wall Street bank behind the view that institutional demand is coming back into crypto, even after a brutal washout that drove bitcoin and ether sharply lower earlier this year.
Citi Raises Bitcoin Target to $113,000

The bank lifted its 12-month bitcoin forecast to $113,000 from $82,000 and its ether target to $3,028 from $2,240, saying stronger crypto activity, a supportive macro backdrop and renewed exchange-traded fund inflows justify a more constructive call. That is economically important because crypto prices remain highly sensitive to the pace of professional money entering the market through spot ETFs and related vehicles. Citi expects roughly $5 billion of inflows over the next year, a pace it sees as steady rather than explosive, but still enough to underpin a recovery in the two largest tokens.
The upgrade also reinforces a broader market narrative: crypto’s next leg higher may depend less on retail speculation than on advisers, brokerages and other institutional allocators building positions methodically. That matters for liquidity, price discovery and portfolio construction. If the flows arrive as Citi expects, they could help absorb supply from investors who have been reducing exposure since bitcoin’s retreat from its record high. If they do not, the rally has less fundamental support.
Citi’s call is also notable for its relative preference for bitcoin over ether. The targets imply about 31% upside for bitcoin from levels around $86,000 when the note was written, versus only about 11% for ether near $2,700. That gap suggests the bank thinks bitcoin will capture the first wave of fresh allocations, even though ether has outperformed over recent months. For investors, that makes bitcoin the cleaner expression of a flow-led rebound, while ether may need deeper ecosystem or regulatory catalysts to justify further rerating.
The macro backdrop remains a critical swing factor. Citi is betting that a softer dollar and a more benign risk environment can support crypto, but higher Treasury yields or renewed dollar strength would likely tighten financial conditions and weigh on non-income-generating assets. Adalytica’s Bitcoin Fear & Greed Index points to extreme fear even as awareness remains elevated, underscoring the tension between market attention and actual risk appetite. That kind of backdrop can magnify both upside if flows turn positive and downside if macro conditions deteriorate.
Regulation is still a secondary but meaningful variable. Citi said the Senate’s failure to advance the Clarity Act narrowed the path for market-structure legislation, but SEC rule announcements helped ease sentiment. For investors, that means policy is no longer the sole driver of the trade, yet it still matters for how quickly institutions can scale exposure and how confidently they can hold it.
The immediate test is whether weekly ETF flow data confirms Citi’s thesis. A sustained pickup would validate the bank’s higher targets and support bitcoin’s relative outperformance. A renewed slowdown would leave the market more exposed to macro headwinds, with ether and smaller tokens likely more vulnerable than bitcoin.
