Costco is opening membership sign-ups in Malaga now, turning a 2027 store launch into an immediate revenue and foot-traffic test for the warehouse club model.
Costco Opens Malaga Membership Sign-Ups Ahead of 2027
The U.S. retailer will start processing memberships on Monday from a temporary office at Malaga Nostrum, more than a year before the planned spring 2027 opening of its first warehouse in the city. That lets Costco lock in customers early, build local demand and start monetizing the site through annual fees before the sales floor opens.
The Malaga membership push matters because Costco’s economics depend on recurring fee income as much as merchandise sales. In its latest annual filing, the company said membership fees rose 11% in fiscal 2026 to $5.91 billion, helped by new sign-ups, fee increases and upgrades to Executive memberships. The business also relies on high renewal rates, which stood at 92.3% in the U.S. and Canada and 89.8% elsewhere.
For Spanish shoppers, the pitch is a familiar one: about 36 euros a year for individuals and 30 euros for businesses and self-employed customers, plus a 10-euro voucher on purchases, immediate access to Costco stores and fuel stations across Spain, and an extended renewal window through spring 2028 for early joiners. That incentive structure is designed to seed loyalty before the warehouse even opens.
The Malaga site will cover more than 12,000 square meters inside the commercial park, including a 5,811-square-meter sales floor, storage and checkout areas, plus departments for meat, dairy, produce, seafood, frozen foods, bakery, prepared meals and rotisserie items. A fuel station is also planned, extending Costco’s low-price, high-volume offer into another high-traffic category.
For investors, the move underscores Costco’s continued international expansion at a time when consumers remain under pressure and value chains are competing harder for basket share. It also adds another catalyst for the stock, which has recently been trading well above its 50-day and 200-day moving averages and near the upper end of its Bollinger Bands, while RSI readings have been elevated.
The next watchpoint is execution: how quickly Costco converts early sign-ups into local traffic and whether the Malaga opening accelerates membership growth in Spain beyond the initial launch window.
