Arthur Hayes has dumped about $22.3 million of altcoins, led by $15.2 million of Ethereum, as a risk-off wave from Middle East tensions and a broader tech selloff hits crypto markets.
Ethereum ETFs See $1.1B Outflow as ETH Sinks
The Maelstrom CIO said he took profits on ETH, ENA, UNI and other tokens because the macro backdrop “looks a bit dicey,” pointing to geopolitical uncertainty after reports the U.S. was moving personnel out of the Middle East. Bitcoin fell to around $80,000 in that same stretch, underscoring how quickly digital assets are being repriced when investors pull back from risk.
Ethereum is taking the heaviest hit. U.S. spot ETH ETFs have shed $1.1 billion this month, nearly three times the $313 million pulled from bitcoin funds, marking the second-largest monthly outflow since the products launched. That matters because ETF flows have become one of the clearest gauges of institutional demand, and persistent redemptions can overwhelm otherwise supportive fundamentals.
The selling comes as Ethereum bulls face a weakening demand picture. Early holders have been cashing out, Bitmine has nearly hit its 5% ETH supply target at 6.053 million tokens, and the network still adds roughly 20,000 ETH a week to supply on average. Even record staking demand is not enough to offset the pressure if ETF outflows continue.
Price action reflects that strain. ETH is trading around $2,262 after losing roughly 15% from its recent $2,800 peak, with technical momentum still weak as it sits below its 50-day moving average and the RSI remains subdued. A clean break below the $2,300 area could open the door to $2,200 and then $2,100, while bitcoin is also below its 50-day average and hovering near $77,700.
For investors, Hayes’ move is less about one trader’s conviction than a larger message: crypto remains highly sensitive to macro shocks, and altcoins are usually the first source of liquidity when fear rises. The next test is whether geopolitical headlines ease enough to stabilize ETF flows and keep ETH above its key support band.
