Gold prices tumbled more than 2% and fell below a key technical level as investors bet that rising energy costs will keep inflation sticky and force the Federal Reserve to hold rates higher for longer.
Gold Falls Below $4,100 as Yields Stay High

Spot gold traded around $4,058 an ounce in the afternoon session, slipping under the $4,100 support that traders often watch as a line of defense for the rally. Silver was hit even harder, dropping more than 4% to about $55 an ounce, while platinum and palladium also lost ground.

The move matters because it shows that the market’s inflation hedge trade is being overwhelmed, at least for now, by the prospect of prolonged monetary tightening. Gold is typically seen as protection against price pressures, but when real yields stay elevated and cash and bonds offer better returns, the metal’s appeal weakens. That trade-off is becoming more acute as energy prices revive inflation fears and push investors to reassess how soon the Fed can ease policy.
The backdrop is notable in rates and currency markets. U.S. 10-year Treasury yields were near 5%, a level that keeps the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding bullion high. At the same time, Adalytica’s Gold Fear & Greed Index showed “Extreme Fear” at 11, underscoring how quickly sentiment has deteriorated. Silver’s steeper drop suggests that industrial demand concerns are compounding the macro pressure, making it more vulnerable than gold to a tightening financial backdrop.

For miners and bullion-linked funds, the selloff is a warning that the recent rally may be running into a more durable policy headwind. Gold-mining equities such as the VanEck Gold Miners ETF and silver-focused vehicles are likely to remain highly sensitive to shifts in Fed expectations, Treasury yields and the dollar. The gold market can still find support if recession risks rise or the Fed signals a pause, but for now investors are trading the same narrative that drove the decline: hotter inflation, tighter policy and less room for precious metals to outperform.
