Gold and silver prices fell again on October 21, giving buyers a brief respite just as India’s festive and wedding-season demand is set to accelerate.
Gold, silver fall before India festival demand

The decline matters because precious metals are still trading near historically elevated levels, and even a modest pullback can shift purchase timing for households, jewellers and investors. In a market where gold is widely used as a store of value and silver has deep seasonal demand for gifts and puja purchases, lower rates can quickly pull forward retail buying.

On the Multi Commodity Exchange, gold slipped 0.31% to Rs 1,46,179 per 10 grams, down Rs 451 from the previous session. Silver fell 0.26% to Rs 2,09,935 per kilogram, a decline of Rs 545. The move extends a short-term correction after bullion had earlier climbed on festival buying and global uncertainty.
For consumers, the drop is welcome. Dhanteras and Diwali buying is only beginning, and jewellers typically see a sharp pickup in orders when prices ease from recent highs. The timing also matters for traders and bullion funds: the retreat suggests the market is still wrestling with the usual mix of seasonal demand, profit-taking and broader macro forces that support haven assets.
Gold’s appeal has been reinforced by geopolitical tension and the potential for inflation-linked volatility, while oil-market swings can keep expectations for interest rates and inflation in flux. Those are the conditions that tend to keep long-term bullion demand firm, even when prices soften in the short run.
For investors, the key question is whether this is a temporary dip or the start of a deeper reset. The answer will determine whether bullion-linked products, jewellery names and gold-mining stocks regain momentum or remain range-bound through the rest of the festival season. For now, the message is simple: the pullback improves entry points, but it does not remove the underlying support for precious metals.
