ICA’s decision to phase out its well-known Ica I love eco label matters because it risks confusing shoppers at a time when value, trust and clarity on the shelf are becoming more important, not less.
ICA changes eco label strategy in Sweden

The Swedish grocer is replacing a popular own-brand range with a broader “Gott Liv” format covering about 250 products across some 20 categories, from dairy and coffee to beans, frozen berries and vegetables. ICA says the move is meant to make it easier for customers to choose products with health or sustainability credentials, and that more than 1,100 eco-labelled items will remain in its central assortment.
That explanation is unlikely to calm the backlash. Critics say ICA is blurring the line between organic goods and conventional products by putting them under one umbrella, making it harder for shoppers to know what is actually ekologiskt. For a supermarket chain that depends on repeat visits and brand trust, that is not just a marketing dispute — it is a merchandising risk. If shoppers start doubting whether a private label means what it says, they can quickly shift baskets to rival grocers, farm shops or specialist sustainable retailers.
The issue also cuts into a bigger retail theme: private labels are no longer just a way to offer cheaper alternatives, but a way to signal quality, origin and values. ICA’s own-brand strategy has been a core part of how it defends share against competition and keeps customers in its ecosystem. Repackaging a familiar eco brand may simplify the portfolio for the company, but it could weaken a clear cue that many consumers used to navigate the aisle.
For investors, the immediate read-through is less about a single brand change than about the balance between simplification and differentiation in food retail. If ICA gets this wrong, the damage would show up first in customer sentiment and basket migration, then in private-label loyalty and margin mix. If it gets it right, the chain can broaden appeal by bundling health and sustainability into a single platform. The market will be watching whether this “simpler” format actually preserves premium pricing power and repeat traffic.
| Entity | Gains | Losses |
