India’s oil import mix is shifting fast, with Venezuelan crude overtaking other suppliers to rank third in August as shipments from Russia dropped 16.5% from July to 2.1 million barrels a day and Middle East supply climbed.
India Oil Imports Shift Toward Venezuela in August

The change matters because India, the world’s third-largest oil importer, is trying to keep fuel costs and energy security in balance while navigating sanctions on Russia, OPEC supply decisions and renewed volatility in the Middle East. A broader sourcing basket can reduce dependence on any one producer, but it also leaves refiners more exposed to freight costs, pricing differentials and geopolitical disruptions.
Russia remained India’s biggest supplier even after the August pullback, with the United Arab Emirates and Venezuela following behind, Reuters reported, citing trade sources. The shift in volumes came as state-backed ADNOC moved more crude from outside the Strait of Hormuz, selling from storage and export terminals in Fujairah and Sohar to support flows into Asia.
For investors, the reordering of India’s crude imports matters most for oil producers, refiners and tanker operators. Russian exporters lose some marginal share in a market that has been crucial since Western sanctions redirected barrels east, while Middle East suppliers gain leverage as India looks for alternatives. Venezuelan producers also benefit from a larger foothold in a major growth market, even if volumes remain small relative to Russia and Gulf exporters.
The shift comes as global oil benchmarks stay elevated and import costs remain sensitive to any disruption in shipping routes or supply policy. Higher crude diversity may help Indian refiners secure barrels, but it does not necessarily mean cheaper feedstock, especially if replacement supplies come from farther away or on less favorable terms.
The next catalyst is whether India keeps trimming Russian purchases in coming months or reverses course if discounts widen again, alongside any further disruption in Gulf shipping routes or changes in US pressure on New Delhi.
