The pullback in AI and other high-growth tech names is helping broaden the U.S. stock market, with money rotating into older, more defensive blue chips as investors step away from the most crowded artificial-intelligence trades.
Nasdaq-100 Pullback Drives Rotation Into Value Stocks

That shift matters because a market led by a narrow group of megacap AI winners has left indexes vulnerable to sharp swings. When those leaders lose momentum, breadth improves only if capital moves into the rest of the market rather than leaving equities altogether — and that is what traders are watching now.
Handelsblatt Live US stock market expert Markus Koch said the weakness in the AI segment is encouraging investors to buy standard values again, a sign the rally is becoming less dependent on a handful of technology giants. The Dow Jones edged higher even as tech shares came under pressure, underscoring the rotation.
The Nasdaq-100 tracking fund QQQ closed at 717.53 on Oct. 19, down from 728.00 on Oct. 15 and below its 50-day moving average of 726.23, while the S&P 500 tracker SPY held at 766.49, just under its 50-day average of 767.30. The tech-heavy XLK fund fell to 185.98, also below its 50-day average of 189.77, showing that the selling is concentrated in the technology complex rather than the broader market.
Technical indicators also point to softer momentum in tech. QQQ’s RSI reading was 38.2, while XLK’s was 36.1, levels that suggest the recent decline has cooled but not yet washed out the sector. SPY’s RSI at 52.3 looks more stable, reinforcing the view that broad-market selling has been less severe than the hit to AI-linked shares.
The rotation comes as investors reassess how much of the market’s gains have been tied to artificial intelligence enthusiasm, especially after a run of product announcements and model launches from the sector. New AI releases have kept the theme in focus, but the latest trading action suggests the market is starting to differentiate between headline growth stories and the rest of corporate America.
For investors, that has two implications: a wider base of support could make the rally more durable, but continued AI weakness could cap upside in the Nasdaq and other growth-heavy benchmarks. The next test is whether buyers keep moving into industrials, financials and other non-tech leaders, or whether the move turns into a broader risk-off trade if tech selling deepens.
